Holistic/ Somatic Counseling Psychology
Holistic/somatic psychotherapy validates the connection between the mind and the body. It is common for individuals who have suffered trauma to disconnect from their body experience. The body was a painful place to exist during traumatic events and often the person disconnects the body experience because it was too painful and too life threatening to be aware during the trauma.
Holistic/somatic therapy encompasses the totality of the person. It connects the individual back to experiencing themselves in the present moment. When this happens the individual often feels alive and authentic in their intentions and purpose.
Holistic/somatic counseling work integrates breath, experiential awareness, and mindfulness, work along with traditional talk therapy and psycho-educational support. It is through embodied awareness that the individual can then let go of old holding and tension patterns in the body.
This letting go allows for the creation of new ways of being in the world. Through awareness of the way the body constricted during stress or trauma the individual is allowing themselves to expand into the present moment.
Through awareness the individual is giving themselves permission to develop greater presence, openness and curiosity.
